Ontario Ministry of Health Seeks Help from Chiropractors

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care gave funding and support to the Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA) to develop, implement, and evaluate a “consulting chiropractor” position within Ontario’s healthcare system to work with medical doctors in treating low back pain. The incentive was to improve the quality and delivery of appropriate care for low back pain, which is an initiative the ministry identified as a major priority.

The objective of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and value of a healthcare model in which the consulting Doctor of Chiropractic performs an assessment in a medical doctor’s office of a patient suffering low back pain for the express purpose of offering advice, education, and decision support to the medical doctor. The program is available to patients suffering acute, recurring, or chronic low back pain.

Actual chiropractic care of low back patients was not included in the program but collaboration between medical doctors and Doctors of Chiropractic was reported to be helpful with strong evidence that medical doctors benefited from the knowledge transfer.
