New Guidelines for Low Back Pain Feature Spinal Manipulation

The State of Oregon has released its new Evidence-Based Clinical Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of Low Back Pain. Interestingly, these guidelines list spinal manipulation as the only non-drug treatment for acute low back pain.

These guidelines were adopted by the Oregon Health Authority as a collaborative effort between the Center for Evidence-Based Practice, the Oregon Corporation for Health Care Quality, the Oregon Health and Sciences University’s Center for Evidence-Based Policy, and the Oregon Health Evidence Review Commission.

Adoption of these guidelines involved the submission of many studies showing the efficacy of a conservative but intensive interdisciplinary approach to low back pain instead of relying solely on surgery or other invasive procedure. One of the studies submitted was the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) acute low back pain guidelines. The AHCPR guidelines state that spinal manipulation helps relieve pain while restoring function. This is an important point because while pain medications help to temporarily relieve pain they do nothing to restore function, which is a vital component of truly healing low back pain syndromes.
