Increasing Prescription Drug Use Is a Vicious Cycle

As the United States is seeking effective but less expensive healthcare programs the use of prescription drugs is escalating the cost of healthcare to never-before-seen levels.

In the United States the leading cause of acute liver failure is due to acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) consumption. This has lead to 140,000 poisoning cases and 56,000 emergency room visits that have all added to the national cost of healthcare. The 100 deaths that occurred as a result of acetaminophen consumption added to the human cost of such complications from drug use.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are the second leading cause of peptic ulcers causing 100,000 hospitalizations each year. This amounts to an estimated $2 billion in added healthcare costs in addition to the 17,000 deaths caused by NSAIDS in the U.S. every year.

The increase in narcotic pain medicine use between 1999 and 2005 is staggering with the estimated annual cost of these medications rising to $500 billion by 2015.  Add to that the cost of lost work days combined with the decrease in work potential and the expense of such a situation becomes mind boggling.

The Centers for Disease Control recently announced that 9 out of 10 poisonings are related to prescription drug abuse with 40% of these being attributable to pain medications. However, you can easily avoid many of these detrimental situations by using natural, drug-free chiropractic care for many of your healthcare needs.
